ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • High winds fanned a field fire near Runnells on Friday that spread across about 30 to 40 acres—sparking from embers of a controlled burn on Thursday—and the Camp Township–Runnells Fire Department responded around 2:30 p.m. at the 9100 block of Southeast 13th Avenue with help from Altoona, Mitchellville and Pleasant Hill while no property damage or injuries were reported.  WHO 13

  • Monica Pietig — a third-year Drake Law School student — worked with the Polk County Attorney’s Office to prosecute habitual domestic abuser Brian Scott Cooper, who was sentenced to 30 years in prison for beating and choking his ex-girlfriend in a trial at Drake University.  KCCI

  • Polk County supervisors are discussing merging the county’s Medical Examiner’s Office with the state’s new $36 million facility—aiming to fix delays that have left some families waiting over eight weeks since early January—while a local funeral director warned that combining the offices might lower service quality for county families.  KCCI
