GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Polk County tax assessments are rolling out to homes this week and early reports show the increases are smaller than those in 2023—homeowners seeing boosts around $13,000 to $16,000 may see only modest tax hikes unless the assessments rise over 20%. Homeowners have until April 30 to appeal, with the first payment due on September 1. WHO 13
- ➤ Governor Reynolds signed a bill making Iowa a hands‐free only state—joining Minnesota as its neighbor with a similar law—and the measure goes into effect July 1. Some drivers say the change works well for modern vehicles while others, including students with older cars, worry it will be a difficult adjustment. WHO 13
- ➤ The Iowa House decided not to move forward with a bill that would shield pesticide companies from health-related lawsuits after the Senate passed it with a 26 to 21 vote—House Speaker Pat Grassley said the caucus did not support the measure. WHO 13
