- ➤ A study published Wednesday in the Public Library of Science found that pregnant women exposed to nitrates in drinking water had increased risks of low birth weight and pre-term births during the 1970s and '80s in Iowa. Assistant professor Jason Semprini of Des Moines University analyzed data on over 357,000 births and said nitrate exposure under the safe threshold adds to known risks—although tap water remains below the EPA’s 10 mg/l standard set in 1992.
