Good morning, Ankeny. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 30th of July.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Monday, PEN America filed a legal brief asking the Eighth Circuit to keep the injunction that blocks enforcement of an Iowa law banning books deemed not age appropriate from K-12 school libraries. The brief, submitted on behalf of publishers, teachers and authors, argued that the law forces schools to remove hundreds of books from libraries—undermining students’ First Amendment rights and adding confusion over what materials may be available.  KCCI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Central Iowa Water Works announced that commercial irrigation and lawn watering will resume today after a ban that began on June 12 due to high nitrate levels in local rivers. The technical committee reached its decision based on low customer demand — residential properties resumed watering last week with alternating schedules for even and odd numbered addresses.  KCCI

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Iowa veteran Joedy VanVelzen reached Maine on the Appalachian Trail — the final state in his nearly 2,200-mile journey — after a rough week in New Hampshire battling near-zero visibility, high winds, and rain. He now has less than 300 miles left and plans to finish his hike in a couple of weeks.  WHO 13
  • Velma Chestnut turned 105 today — born in 1920 when women won the right to vote and prohibition began, she celebrated her milestone with a party at The Suites of Ankeny. She received 105 birthday cards each with a dollar — and she said her secret is not overdoing things as she takes life one day at a time.  KCCI
