COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Two Iowa cancer survivors will be honored at the Light the Night walk Saturday at DMACC in Ankeny—Albia fifth-grader Lennox Craig, two years off her leukemia treatment, and local survivor Tricia Busch, now in remission after battling lymphoma, will be celebrated during the event; it will begin at 7:30 p.m. and be followed by fireworks.  KCCI

CRIME NEWS

  • Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist, was shot and killed Wednesday at a Utah college event — Iowa leaders from both parties shared condolences and urged an end to political violence — as law enforcement works to locate the suspect.  KCCI

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Central Iowa farmers began the corn harvest early. Story County farmer Brian Sampson started on Tuesday after record rainfall dried his crop quickly and the latest report shows 80% of Iowa's corn is in the dented stage.  KCCI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Iowa’s Department of Insurance and Financial Services stopped over $2.7 million from being sent to scammers through events held in 22 communities—starting in Windsor Heights in April—and recovered nearly $270,000 while investigating over $10 million in fraud this year.  KCCI

HEALTH NEWS

  • Polk County Health Department Director Juliann Van Liew expressed concern that changes to the CDC vaccine program by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. could limit access to affordable COVID vaccines. A revamped CDC advisory committee will meet next week — local doctors warn that lower vaccination rates may increase disease outbreaks and advise residents to get the latest vaccine information from their doctors.  KCCI
