- ➤ Ankeny launched its first-ever fire academy on a donated property off I-35 last month—23 new firefighting recruits now get 14 weeks of hands-on training in fire suppression, rescue operations and emergency medical services. Former teacher Kevin Andrews joined the program after a career exploration class sparked his interest, and officials expect the academy to draw more recruits. KCCI
