CULTURE NEWS

  • Central Iowa cities have ended the Beggars’ Night tradition and moved trick‐or‐treating back to Halloween night due to severe weather disruptions—Ankeny and other towns will hold events on Oct. 31.  KCCI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Iowa's water quality monitoring system faces funding cuts that will put at risk its 75 sensors tracking high nitrate levels—real-time data could vanish this spring if the cuts proceed. Researchers warn that without the system, water managers and utilities will have a harder time protecting drinking water.  KCCI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Dallas County jury awarded former Polk County HR director Jim Nahas more than $4 million in a wrongful termination lawsuit, and taxpayers will help pay part of the award. Nahas was fired in 2020 and sued Supervisors Hockensmith and Connolly and former administrator Norris—Norris must now pay $250,000 while each supervisor must pay $5,000 as new leadership is expected to move forward.  KCCI

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Iowa Cubs manager Buddy Bailey, who won over 2,400 games in 36 minor league seasons (including a 78-66 record in 2007), died at 68 on September 23. He ranks as the third-winningest minor league manager behind Stan Wasiak and Bob Coleman.  KCCI
