  • Iowa Bankers Association advises residents to protect their personal and financial information from scammers who use phishing emails and texts to gain access to sensitive data. The group recommends using spam filters — multi-factor authentication to check suspicious messages and report phishing attempts.  FOX 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • United Way’s 2-1-1 hotline is open 24/7 to help Iowans impacted by the government shutdown—furloughed federal workers and those living paycheck to paycheck can call for help with housing, utilities, food, and transportation.  WHO 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Allergy season remains strong as warm weather, harvest dust, and dry air raise ragweed levels and cause many patients in Iowa to mistake their symptoms for colds or serious illnesses—some even developing bronchitis. Dr. Amy Vowels of Optimum Wellness Solutions said the rise in severe allergy cases has driven more people to seek proper treatment.  WHO 13

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The Iowa Pork Producers released the 2025 finalists for the Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin Contest on Wednesday—The 1854, Dexfield Diner & Pub (now operating from 1119 Thomas Street after a February 2024 fire), Hometown Heroes, Sugar’s Lounge & Diner, and Walker’s—with three judges set to choose a winner later this month during Porktober; the top prize is $500 with statewide publicity and the runner-up earns $250 and a plaque. This contest highlights food favorites from central Iowa.  WHO 13
