COMMUNITY NEWS

  • All Hy-Vee stores with hot food service will offer free meals for kids 12 and under from 4 to 7 p.m. during November 3-7 and serve meals for $3 to others, while nearly 267,000 Iowans miss SNAP funds this month; starting Friday, stores will provide food bank donation bundles—items include canned meats, vegetables, pasta sauce and cereal—and Hy-Vee also donated $100,000 to Feeding America and $25,000 to help waive DoorDash fees.  KCCI
  • Thousands of kids across Central Iowa trick-or-treated on Halloween as Des Moines hosted the event for the first time in 87 years—after changing its schedule following severe weather last year. Police deployed extra crews on Court Avenue to manage large crowds and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau offered $10 Uber vouchers for safe rides through Sunday.  WHO 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Des Moines Area Community College has named Dr. Liang Chee Wee as its interim president starting Jan 1st — the board will search for a permanent leader after President Rob Denson’s retirement. He led Northeast Iowa Community College from 2011 to 2022 and served nearly two years as interim chancellor at Eastern Iowa Community Colleges.  KCCI

HEALTH NEWS

  • The University of Iowa received a grant from the Institute of Health to study sudden infant death syndrome and will examine brain and heart tissue in a collaboration with several universities — researchers hope the findings will clarify causes behind unexplained infant deaths. Families of children who died from SIDS in Iowa since 2005 are invited to participate in the study.  WHO 13
