Good morning, Ankeny. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 4th of December.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Central Iowa Shelter and Services is hosting 203 people out of its 275-person capacity (a result of harsh winter weather). CEO Melissa O'Neil said early use of weather amnesty has strained resources and urged donations of Tylenol and cough medicine to support the shelter tonight.  KCCI
  • The extreme cold has increased calls for heating help as Impact Community Action Partnership reported nearly 14,000 households in central Iowa may need LIHEAP assistance. State carryover funds are keeping the program running until new 2026 funds start flowing (applications can be made online or by calling 515 518-4770).  KCCI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Following nearly 10 inches of weekend snow, metro crews are clearing roads as temperatures drop into the 30s today and are set to fall into single digits overnight — conditions that will cause bumpy but manageable travel tomorrow.  KCCI
  • This fall, Des Moines Water Works data showed high nitrate levels that led Central Iowa Water Works to issue a watering ban and run its nitrate removal system for 122 days. Experts say more sensors are needed as nitrate levels remain higher than in past decades.  KCCI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • DART will overhaul its bus network to offer faster service with fewer stops by moving stops from every block to every 2 or 3 blocks (following rider feedback and budget cuts). The new routes will launch next summer.  KCCI

HEALTH NEWS
